He did NOT cut off any noses. Rent it. As movies go, it's very different.

I saw A Clockwork Orange again, recently. It didn't interest me as much these years later as it did at first.

Saturday-May 22

This movie arrived from Netflix a week ago, but I finally got around to seeing it today:

FROM HELL

starring Johnny Depp as the detective who was covering the Jack The Ripper case back in 1888.

This story is somewhat hypothetical, filling in the details of what was known with what actually could have beeen...providing motive...and more.

I will never see another Jack The Ripper movie again. I not going to wonder about who did it anymore...even if this is not true, it's mighty convincing.

Oh my god I JUST finished watching that as I got on here :P

So creepy and really gory too..

And actually, my 7th grade European history teacher hypothesized that the culprit in the movie (I don't wanna give it away..) was the real Jack the Ripper... He convinced me completely :P And, it makes complete sense.. As creepy as it is

I saw ALICE IN WONDERLAND last night. I was only slightly entertained. Considering the talent involved from start to finish, the resources and the money available, etc...It COULD HAVE BEEN much better.

After the kids went home, I watched another Johnny Depp film,: PUBLIC ENEMIES. This time he played 30's band robber/murderer, John Dillinger. The movie is outstanding.

I watched THE BLIND SIDE the other night. I had a puddle of tears well up in my eyes from practically the first scene, and they puddled there throughout the entire movie, to finally spill over near the end. A sob story worth watching. There really are some good people with big hearts that come together with someone who needs exactly that, and it all turns out beautiful. It seems sort of too much like a fairy tale. That this is a true story, makes it even more endearing to watch,as this story unfolds.

Has anyone here seen A Life Less Ordinary? It's hilarious! It's about this guy, Robert Lewis, who works as a janitor for a really big company. Robert is replaced by a machine and decides to take revenge on his boss by kidnapping his daughter, Celine Naville. The only problem with this; he doesn't know the first thing about kidnapping!
In heaven (which resembles a modern Police HQ), angels have to try and help people find their true love. Captain Gabriel is upset about the performance of O'Reilly and Jackson, whos cases always end in divorce or misery. Gabriel decides that if they do not solve this case, they must stay on Earth for all eternity. So, they must find a way of getting Robert and Celine to fall, and stay, in love.

Brilliant movie, reccomend it to anyone in need of a good laugh.

That sounds good. Thanks for the recommendation. I have watched "The Notebook" twice within about a week, and I just love that movie. The story is great, and Ryan Gosling is a hottie. I wish that they (Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling) didn't break up in real life. They seem so meant for each other, a match made in heaven.

Other good movies I recommend are

-The Red Violin
-Into the Wild
-Mr. Holland's Opus
-I Love You Man (funny)

There's also a movie that I think is called "True Love" or something really generic like that with Rob Morrow (from Northern Exposure, Dr. Fleishman) and Marissa Tomei (sp?), which is on my top 10 list of most romantic tearjerkers, but it's really hard to find. At the end, Marissa plays the cello while Rob plays the piano. It's a must watch for hopeless romantic like me (LOL).

Re: Good Movies That I Have Seen Lately....

I don't know what to say about A SINGLE MAN.

For one thing, Colin Firth wept throughout nearly the entire movie, and got an Oscar nomination for it.

The movie is set in the 60's. It is very artistically rendered. The mood is very sad, but hopeful, then sad but sort of hopeful, then sad to the point that I started crying again...then just when my hope was peaking, I was bawling. This movie has THE WORST AND MOST SADDEST ENDING OF ANY MOVIE...EVER!

I told my 82 year old mother I was sending the disk back to Netflix without letting her watch it. She was not going to watch THE MOST depressing movie I've EVER seen. Her two BFF's are a gay couple in her building and for one of the guys we are all HOPING to hear a good report this week that his cancer has been healed (so far, the reports have be really good). This movie would have plummeted her and her pals into immediate sadness...as it did to me. Non of them (nor I) needed this kind of sad.

Even so, it was a VERY meaningful, if terribly sad, movie. I can surely see why Colin Firth got the nomination.

---------------

Another of my absolute favorite movies is HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE. Since I cheated my mom out of a new video, when i saw that Howl's Moving Castle was playing again, yesterday, I called her and talked her into watching it. Which she did...gratefully, as it turned out. I love that movie. It would be difficult not to. I began loving it when it was all in sub-titles. Now, it has been dubbed, and Howl sort of sounds like Keanu Reeves...and that, to me, sounds strange coming out of Howl's mouth.

Re: Good Movies That I Have Seen Lately....

I rented CRAZY HEART because my mother wanted to see it so much. I let her watch it first. She said that she loved it and that I would too.

I did not.

I'm not into movies about an out of control sloppy drunkard cowboy singer who drank his once upon a time outstanding respected career into the pits of performing in bowling alleys with borrowed backup bands. Finally he hits the bottom. Then he drags his sorry ass to rehab and does okay after that.

I did say to myself, before the movie started that ANYBODY (you, me...literally anybody at all) can sing Country Western music. And lo & behold! When I saw Colin Ferrel starring as the new and upcoming country music singing sensation who was once in the washed up dude's traveling band...and heard country music coming out of HIS OWN MOUTH...my point was proven.

Did Jeff Bridges deserve a Best Actor Oscar for this movie? If he is not a genuine drunkard who can sing really good country western style songs out of his own mouth...I suppose that he did deserve it.

It's something to watch when there is nothing better on t.v.

Re: Good Movies That I Have Seen Lately....

Last night I watched MY ONE AND ONLY, which is supposed to be an autobiographical account of George Hamilton's childhood. It says on the packaging and elsewhere that it is a comedy. It is not.

During the movie I went into a shock when they were all finally living in California and a call comes that the dad had passed. I was in shock not because the dad had passed, but because on the wall of the movie room there was a very large print of a pair of cockatoos that on MY WALL directly across from the t.v., hanging above the futon, was THE EXACT SAME PICTURE --- EXACT IN EVERY SINGLE LITTLE DETAIL...same frame and everything (however I painted my previously identical white frame black when I got the black futon).

That picture has been on a wall in every home I have lived in since I was born. My parents gave it to me back in the eighties to keep for myself (because I begged for it, I think) I was completely amazed. It was absolutely identical. That was the best part of the movie for me.

Regarding pictures: my mom only recently gave me the other picture that I've known since birth...a big gorgeous tiger painted on silk that my father got when he was in Japan after WWII. I have that one next to the t.v. I wonder when I will see that one in a movie, too?

I saw REMEMBER ME last night. Drama it was, but too much of it; with all of it moving as slow as molasses down a rainspout in the dead cold of winter. I was almost ready to jump ship. But then IT happened...when I saw the chalkboard I though "Oh no." And it all made sense, falling into it's assigned sad place.

After all theses dramas (including the one that was supposed to be a comedy, but wasn't funny), I have IT"S COMPLICATED near the t.v., waiting for me to pop it in the DVD. I need a laugh. A chuckle at the very least.

She watched 2012 in the early morning yesterday, after I thought I was not able to talk her into it. She loved the movie...she couldn't believe how she was riveted to the edge of her seat (at which I worry she would fall...as she has before under less exciting conditions). That was some of the most amazing special effects that I've ever seen. I swear that they had to use sheets of chocolate cake for the earth to rip it apart like that.

I also managed to talk her into watching and loving DISTRICT 9...which she got mad at me for suggesting, until after she saw it and was mesmerized by how incredible the story and the effects were. I loved that movie.

Also on her "I don't want to see it, I know I will hate it list"...but she watched anyway...was REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. She called me afterwards, and every time since when she hears that eerie music from the film. She did say she has seen the worst of the worst of drug movies now, and doesn't want to see anymore. We both agreed that movie was amazing...but so disturbing that we could not get it out of our heads until weeks afterwards.

The saving grace from all the drama was my (and her) favorite comedy so far, which is the British version of DEATH AT A FUNERAL. Omigod! I was rolled up in a ball, laughing until I could barely breath. It's hysterical.
