What's happen with Porl? PLEASE!

Anyone here knows what happens with Porl?
I mean, why he left The Cure again?

Porl has not confirmed anything, and nobody talked about it.

Man, that's too sad! A mean, Porl brought the band a sound so cool with his powerful guitar. It's a shame if he doesn't return to The Cure in 2012.

Besides he's gorgeous! Is a pleasure see him on stage, Hahaha!

I really, really, really hope he come back in 2012.

Robert, Simon, Porl, Roger and Boris was the best line up ever! That's THE CURE, the real The Cure.

Could it be that he was p*ssed off about Lol being involved in the Reflection gigs? Maybe Porlis not quite as forgiving as Robert about the royalties court case years ago? Just a suggestion.. don't quote me

Well, I have to agree... Robert, Porl, Boris, Simon, Perry... Just about 20 years ago, but nothing has come close to this since the departure of Boris....

Because I tell the truth. Because I attended a Cure concert long before you and I know how The Cure used to be. With Jason the band went downhill... maybe it's a coincidence but I don't think so. As I ever said: maybe Jason is a superb drummer but he just doesn't fit a band like The Cure. His style just doesn't match. Happy New Year to you

The Cure can't do this kind of versions of A Forest anymore because they now use a fixed metronome.

It's funny because I remember that Jason lovers used to accuse Boris of being too robotic and sound like a drum machine... hahaha and what is Jason doing nowadays? he plays with a fixed time dictated by a metronome every night, the same timing every night, and NO SPACE for improvisation or creative moments.

Who is the drum machine now?


About Festival:

1) It sounds like Entreat Plus... then it sounds dry
2) The backing tape with guitars included sucks!
3) The snare drum sounds like a paint can!
4) Jason still can't play Play for Today as it should be: his bass drum and fills are bad.
5) Excluding the drums, Caterpillar sounds great. The drums are just too "robotic" at the intro, with LOTS of cymbal crashes and hits. Nor Andy or Boris (in MTV Unplugged) abused of a voice of the percussion set.

Again, maybe Jason is a superb drummer but his style is not for The Cure. Many songs have potential but are ruined by the rhytmic section... Jason still doesn't lock with Simon.

What I don't understand about you, RichFit, is why you have made it a one man bash fest aimed at ripping The Cure down to your rigid mentality about music? Rather than going along with the flow of change you have kicked and screamed until the flow, itself, is a freaking mud hole.

If you are so negative about the way the band sounds, to your precious ears, now that it is not to your liking, then why don't you surround yourself with the sounds of the early albums ONLY and stop trying to micro-manage The Cure into being what you demand...yes, demand, them to be now and forever more.

You can join ranks with the anal retentive bunch that DEMAND quite particular playlists at concerts, who dictate that there MUST be more dark songs and what a dark song, to themselves be...to the degree of citing particular other supposedly "dark" songs in the past and ordering up a comparable song to PRECISELY align with in THAT particular way they "like"...etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

I've read more than too much of that kind of crap from "fans" over the years. Honestly, I am convinced THAT kind of rigid mentality is a bona-fide mental problem.

I'm SOOOOOOO sorry that you think that Jason cannot drum Play For Today or any other song to your liking. My remedy for you is: stop listening to the songs that "bother" you. You are simply torturing yourself. Go in peace. Don't worry...Life will go on without you.



P.S. I've been listening to The Cure since they first emerged. I just didn't see them live for a long, long time. Even if I had followed the band...on foot...since the beginning, I still would not be a militant shit head, like you are, about Jason. That's how I feel about it. Actually, RichFit complimented Jason, stating he might actually be a superb drummer.

This may be true, however his 'style' just does not fit The Cure. I think that there are a very many people who feel this way, but have just given up trying to make a change (if RSX would ever listen.

Why have WMS, BF, TC, and 4:13 never reached the heights of earlier stuff? For the most part the band is very disjointed. Just because Jason has been in the band for 13 years it doesn't erase the fact that the material just ain't what it used to be. It has possibilities, I'd have love to have heard what Boris had come up with on Underneath The Stars. Or Anniversary. Sirensong. BloodFlowers.

Then there is the live sound issue... I don't know who their soundman is, but the drums sound very small when compared to the albums - Jason's own original stuff included.

Maybe RichFit ( like myself) hopes beyond hope that a reunion with BW, PT and PB is still possible. Hell - he made up with Lol...

Interview from 1996 (Pulse Magazine):
"I felt the Wish album had a real note of finality-ending with a track called "The End. And then when that lineup fell apart, not so much when Porl went, but WHEN BORIS LEFT and then for a few days Simon was thinking of going, too... ".

Definitely, Boris was as important as Simon for The Cure.


p.s. @ti8tgowbb: I'm not sure if you know that Jason Cooper wasn't Robert's first choice. Actually he was like the third option. But he was lucky to have a good recommendation.

With the 'official' live releases lately, isn't it strange the lack of "Jason" material?

Festival 2005 - out of 30 songs released, a whopping 4 of them are Jason originals.... Alt.End, The End Of The World, Us Or Them, and Signal To Noise

Bestival 2011 - out of 32 songs, a grand total of 3 songs are your boy's originals... The End Of The World, The Only One, and The Hungry Ghost

Why, then, the lack of newer Cure stuff at these latest concerts?

And Jason's "Shake Dog Shake" makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

Can we get back to the original thread question of what's happened to Porl on this thread please?

Despite reading the news on this website for many years I have only just recently logged on to read the posts on the forum. Why do people keep hijacking threads to slag off members of the band that we all love?

If Jason wakes up one morning and thinks "f**k this for a game of soldiers" do you really think that Boris is waiting in the wings waiting to step in? Do you really think that Robert will a*sed auditionning potential drummers?

No! If Jason goes then that will be the end of The Cure. For the last 30 years The Cure have been an important part of my life. For as long as I can remember Robert has always said that The Cure could just as easily end tomorrow as go on forever. Why are Cure "fans" giving him an excuse to pack it all in - it's not as though he needs the money.

Another huge passion in my life is football (I make no apologies to you guys in the US but I refuse to call it soccer. In football you have 'your team'. You support them through thick and thin. Yes the team of '86 or '79 may have been more successful than the one of today, but you still get behind the lads. The Cure are My Team. Team Cure.They even wore Team Cure shirts circa 85/86 (American Football shirts not football shirts).

So let's stop this "I've got more right to an opinion than you have cos I've seen them more than you have" bullshit and let's make this an enjoyable forum to read and post positive comments to!

By the way, what's happened to Porl?

Well, my original post in this thread had to do with Porl, that the RS, PT, SG, BW, PB lineup was probably the best they have ever had.

Not only do a lot of fans disapprove of Jason, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame board seems to agree Jason doesn't fit. They neglect him in The Cure's nomination, snicker....

And by the looks of it, by far most of the replies seem to agree.

I don't agree that if Jason leaves the band will end. The closest it did come to quits was when Boris left, as RSX even said so himself.

They'd probably audition and hire a new guy.... Let me know if any of you Brits see an audition call in your papers, I'll hop a plane in a heartbeat!

But, why did Porl leave/get sacked?

I don't think Boris would want to get back to the band.
What Robert should do is to hire a drummer with similar influences as him and Simon. Not a guy who looks like a californian and never looked as part of a rock band... AND never did anything memorable.


And getting to the thread:

It would be a pity to loose Porl. He is the most talented Cure guitar player.

I read somewhere that he divorced from Robert's sister but those are cheap gossips for now.

In 1996, fans got Robert back to track when they refused to see the band live. Many venues were cancelled due to POOR TICKET SALES.

After that experience, Robert didn't make such experiments again. In fact, nowadays the band is not performing a single song from that album (from time to time they perform "Want" but that's it).

Dude, you are DELUSIONAL. The 1996 Swing Tour got off to a delayed start because of technical lighting problems then Robert got sick. However it DID start, with ALL shows on schedule and NONE cancelled do to poor ticket sales. You are a now a liar and a rumor spreader. This is the schedule. No concerts were canned. I have played drums for nearly 32 years. Yes, Jason is a very competent drummer. Technique-wise, at least on albums, he is very good ( however lets take this with a grain of salt, you can see what magic engineers do with vocals. Imagine what could be done with drums).

He was chosen for The Cure because he was young, and hopefully he could have helped cross them over to a new younger audience. Maybe he has - but the band has not been the same since after Wish. Be it because of Jason, or because Robert hasn't written the best material of his life, or other lineup changes, or a combination of everything I said and more, they are very disjointed and live-wise their sound has suffered for whatever reason....

ti8tgowbb - (man that is an annoying tag to type, why not use your real name like me?) I honestly feel bad you haven't seen them before WMS, the magic hasn't been there for a while.

And before you spout on about how it's not my band - go start my own band - ad nauseum, consider this...

Art does NOT "belong" to everybody. Everybody can look. They can even judge. But they are not permitted to change it. Nor can we direct it. Period. The Cure is not ours! It actually does belong to Robert! To continue to harangue the man with demands and directions is going to ultimately result in him closing down. Real artists, like Robert, do not create with a direction sheet in front of them with fan demands listed. Fan demands end up in the fireplace at best, pissed on at worst. But they are not going to drive him into your corner. Not ever.

I take exception when people use the word "groupie" in an attempt to discredit female music or sports enthusiasts. That's total bullshit. Grow up. Females CAN have a legitimate musical interest in bands composed of the opposite sex. I've been out of radio for more than twenty years now and I can't believe I'm still having to say that.

People are going to disagree with your opinions. Get over it. If your only method of winning an argument is through insults and bullying, then you truly don't have much of an argument.

By the way, art is too the property of the public. You listen to the cure, and love a certain song. It hit's you like a ton of bricks, like RSX knows exactly what you are going through - damn he wrote that song for you! As an artist, this is what you want, for your fans to connect so fully with your works, but with it you lose your possession of it. Not in the publishing/monetary form of the word, but on a more profound level, because your fans make these songs theirs, pieces of their lives....

You need to read about the Transactional theory of literature. Rosenblatt was studying how people learn to read when she penned the theory. In short she said that words are merely inkspots on a piece of paper until we assign meaning to them. As we grow older and know how to read, we assign meaning further to a novel because of our personal life experiences. RSX doesn't write the words or music for us. To him they mean something personal when he writes them. We interpret his words according to life experience...and usually humans all experience loss, love, depression, longing, happiness, etc....the emotions are so universal but I garauntee you that each song evokes a different, if only slightly, memory or emotion in every fan. So art belongs to the artist. We can fool ourselves into believing otherwise, but it is not made for us nor does it mean the same thing to us as it does to the artist. We are lucky that RSX shares his art with us.

Another point, RSX, in many interviews does admit to mistakes...many of them...so I don't understand the part of him having yes men around him.

About the ticket sales....I don't know anything about that really except the media skews most of what it reports because it sells. Cancelling shows due to a sickness or technical problems doesn't have the juiciness of poor ticket sales. Take everything with a grain of salt.

And can we please be down with the bashing of the Cure? If you do not like them anymore, please go listen to your pre-WMS albums and stop bitching about it. Why even consider yourself a fan anymore? All things change and evolve. No, the Cure today is not the Cure of yesterday nor will they be the Cure of tomorrow. Deal with it.

dmschuer and RichFit, I appreciate that you two have drumming experience and know what you're talking about. I honestly don't know a thing about drumming except what I think sounds good. I also think we all appreciate the fact that you are long time Cure fans from way back in the day. (so am I, by the way)
I also agree with you that the old Cure is not the Cure of today, but it never will be. All things evolve and some people just don't like it, but that's the way it is.
Some of us, myself shamelessly included, love everything the Cure does...but not necessarily because we are sheep following mindlessly. Rather, for me, the Cure has been such a part of my life that I choose to embrace the changes. I am not the person I was back when the Cure started and I think I've changed along with them.
That being said...I think it's okay to disagree, but can't we do it in a civil manner. None of this fuck you and fuck that stuff. Also, I really don't like the bashing of Jason. I know, I know...you have said he was good on some songs. But can't we agree to voice our opinions without maligning a current member of our beloved group?
Yes, this is unrestricted....but maybe tone it down a bit on all sides whether you love or hate Jason.
All I am saying is "give peace a chance!" : )

Now, notice that the people who critize Jason here or other forums or in Youtube or wherever, actually take their time to check how the band is doing nowadays. A band that's been an important part of or lives and probably still is, but that thankfulness doesn't make us a bunch of yes-men.

I have my own opinion and I'm convinced that Jason's style doesn't fit The Cure and is spoiling many good songs with potential. Most of the songs in Dream 4:13 have potential but...

You often mention the word "evolve". In the case of The Cure it's not been an evolution and you can easily tell that, by counting how many songs from the 'jason-era' are played live now. Simply put, people doesn't like the new songs and Robert knows that.

I have all the albums in CD and Vinyl, last week I purchased Bestival and I'm expecting the arrival of Disintegration (vinyl version as I already got the Deluxe Edition). If that is not supporting a band then I don't know what it is. If being a "sheep following mindlessly" is what I lack to be a REAL CURE FAN, then don't count me in your team.

To make things clear: I don't have nothing personal against Jason, you or anyone here.

More about being a sheep: Months ago, Craig (from Chain of Flowers) made a poll about the mix work in Entreat Plus. The winner was "I don't like Entreat Plus" and I mentioned it in a post here. Then ti8go&&-whatever told me something that Robert had a problem with Craig and he was a bad person and we should never trust him and blah, blah. So, her point is: "If Robert hates him, then I hate him too"... just like the sheep you correctly mentioned.

A real Cure fan is not a sheep. I can tell from your posts that you are as passionate about the band as many others.
We just have to agree to disagree about the way the Cure was and is now...not that you shouldn't comment. That's why they have the Music then and now board. I was just growing weary of the constant arguing of you and titgbowob??? and others. But whatever...
I will heartily agree with you that the Craig thing is ridiculous!!! How do we even know that Robert 1)knows him or 2) cares about him in the slightest? And what should anyone care about who Robert likes and doesn't? Geesh, can we not think for ourselves?

It would be interesting to get your take on the 4:13 Dream Rome show. I put together the playlist from the show on youtube as soon as I could afterward and played it back and it was wonderful. I hope others did it too. Another great Cure experience and in the Jason era. There are some variations still there on youtube, but the full concert that I loaded is gone now :( Oh and just some relevance to this thread...Porl was awesome.

GO FIND THE POST WHERE I WROTE something... ANYTHING... that has anything whatsoever with what you just said I stated because I NEVER said anything like that about Craig, Chainofflowers nor Robert!
