The whole bestival thing

Hi all, normally I don't tend to write to the forum but I feel a bit disappointed by the bestival cds. Before the album was released I read some reviews from respectable sources which pretty much all said that the live album was a triumph and the sound quality was good. On listening to the album I have to say how little I think of the performance and the sound quality. I'm 36 and have been a huge cure fan since I was twelve. This is the first time I see no merit at all in a product they have released, bar the fact that the money goes to charity.

What you feel is the same millions of fans feel with every release since 1996.

In Bestival the sound is too dry, some guitars are pre-recorded (to compensate for Porl's absense), the snare drum sounds thin and like a paint can, the cymbals don't shine, everything sound like a mono recording.

I bought the CDs mainly because 1) price ($9) 2) it was all for charity

Re: The whole bestival thing

Don't understand how some reviewers were completely of the mark. Honestly, you don't have to be a cure fan to know that this album is pretty much worthless and has the worst version of a forest ever played. R.S seems content to stand in front of crowds and peddle out the greatest hits and enjoy basking in yesteryear's glory. I understand it's only an album but i don't appreciate R.S letting it be released knowing (I assume) that it is both poor in sound quality and content. And, let's face it, the only people who are going to buy the album are dedicated cure fans.

Those "off-the-mark-reviewers" must be of those yes-men that now surround RS. In this forum you can find LOTS!

I hope I don't find it as disappointing as you both do. Mine is on the way...a late Christmas gift from my daughter. Hmmm...I'll let you know.

If you just take it as it is without any expectations and don't draw comparisons from the past you'll love it. I like the rough edges, its very rock. I got it digitally and the sound is great, maybe it makes a difference.

After listening to it several times, I agree that the sound is not great! The drums are awful, like a kid hammering away at a tin drum kit! & Roger's keyboard melodies do not compensate for the lack of Porl's guitar! Having said that, I still love it! It has not been over-produced & coated in sickly-sweet. It is just as it should be, raw & bit rough! For me that's a perfect reminder of a great night at Bestival!

Re: The whole bestival thing

The trouble with different versions of material whether it be music film or anything else for that matter is it is not the original experience that you had (a little like your first kiss).
That said it is good to have alternative versions to listen to for a change.
Re the drums while I was at the RHA gig in the choir I did think the drums stood out in a similar manner to which they do on Bestival. I recon it is a good bet that is how Robert and the boys intended. As we are well aware The Cure have always changed and moved on at time drifting back to reflect other styles of albums but always progressing.
We should be thankful that Bestival was released so that we had something that floated our boat in our Christmas Stocking, and more importantly wetted our appetite for what ever is bubbling in the basement.

curereadder reading your posts makes me think are you a Cure fan you sound like you have been unhappy with their sound for some time yet are still hanging in here. The Cure which I feel is probably more Robert have evolved very successfully where others have fallen by the way. Robert has made very good music choices for years now. I get what you say re the drums however I would hope to think that is how Robert wanted it and would have rubber stamped it and not left it to another individual. He always supplies great value for money CD's and Concerts. It will be interesting what comes next and how the drums sound..

It would be interesting to hear what curereadder response to my post is after all this is a forum to voice your own opinion thoughts etc.
I can understand any split in Cure fans eg. Try listening to the first three albums and consider you had been doing so for many years then one day you hear Love Cats now that is some change in direction. I recall my first thoughts hearing it in HMV. First I thought that sounds like the Cure but with a pop jazz tweek to it. Then listening to Roberts voice it was obvious it was The Cure. I sought of had a feeling of betrayal at first but then I thought I actual like the pop side of The Cure. I think what I'm getting at is change can be good the difficulty is accepting change. That said I am sure many fans who for years listened to the first three albums probably dispersed in other directions following other bands...

what i still don't understand is what side of The Cure are we witnessing now. as you mentioned, with lovecats Robert showed his pop side. But with WMS and the other albums (specially with the self titled one) I just don't know.. maybe The Cure's confused side?

I read an article recently which gave me cause for thought. It was saying that at the point The Cure turned Pop Robert had realised that the original genre they had entered was not going to have commercial longstanding and in so they turned to a more popular sound. Which you can understand why many die hard fans of the early sounds felt they were forgotten. I think rather than thinking of the material as confused I would call it perhaps eclectic and trying to please all fans at differing times. It will be interesting to see what comes on the new album, perhaps the line up will define what comes next.....

Re: The whole bestival thing

I can’ t judge the CD but I came over from Belgium to join the concert. I’m afraid , what you hear is a group who wasn’t playing together for quite a long time.
And in combination with a lot of songs from the early days (Reflection). This wasn’t also to me not the most Cure’s …wow… concert. Also the weather conditions were not most favorable (rain/wind). And for me, not being to big festivals for a couple of years . I noticed how much the audience is changed. Now days is more about having fun than to be in trance from your favorite group or music.
I guess also this is reflected on your CD. On the other hand I didn’t saw a group were I felt sorry for. The rhythm section is in a good cheap and Mr Smith still have everything under control. I’m sure that in their next summer tour they will blow us from the festival grounds as never before followed by a best of CD/DVD.
Ps
And if the name Cure is used for charity we can be proud to be fan from the right Boys.
Johnny

Hey, I just got mine in the mail!!! I love it!!! No, the sound quality is not the best, but it is a live concert so...that's to be expected? Anyway, I love it. Sound different with Roger back but good. And it's for a good cause. What's not to love?

Please, let me ask you if you have soundboard bootleg recordings from 1984-1992 and if you think Bestival sounds better. I'd like to have your opinion, be it that you think it's better or not. Thanks.

No, it's not to be expected. Listen to Show or Paris. Listen to Concert. Listen to In Orange.

The sound plain sucks

Exactly Arnoys. This is something some people in this forum don't understand yet.
Most people nowadays attend just to say they went to see a legendary rock band or just to spend the weekend.

Sadly I agree with your sentiments. However our preference of the Cure original appeal and sound is now definitely a minority. I am fortunate that I still find enjoyment in all styles of music including all style of Cure music unlike some die hard fans. The most annoying thing is that fans don't shut the f*ck up when A Forest is playing, I firmly believe that Robert feels that way although he can never say so. Just take Bestival he's so pissed off with fans groaning over A Forest he has barely left any sound from fans on the CD....

Re: The whole bestival thing

Why were fans groaning during a Forest? Rude people! They were seriously doing that? I'm surprised Robert didn't tell them to shut the fuck up.

No, RichFit, I have never heard any of the soundboard bootlegs from the years you mention.

Yeah, I forgot about Paris. I used to have that but lost it a while back and it's been a while since I've listened to a live album. I've watched Trilogy just the other day, though. I wouldn't be so harsh as to say the sound sucks, but it is lacking.

Re: The whole bestival thing

I was at Bestival, and it was my first ever Cure show, so obviously I was in complete awe and stunned throughout. The sound was great there and I thought that they played fantastically, apart from The Hungry Ghost; that wasn't great.
However, I did notice that due to the fact that the majority of the audience were not actual proper Cure fans, a rather annoying Greatist Hits setlist was played. Just listen to the great cheer that erupts when they start playing Lovecats. Really rather pissed me off at the time, especially as I do not particularly like the song. :)After they played Let's Go To Bed, Why Can't I Be You and Boys Don't Cry, one after the other, I said'let's have some hardcore songs now - that's enough of the pop!' Then they started playing Jumping Someone Else's Train...so I was rather pleased! :)

But I do think that the sound isn't brilliant on the Bestival CD, but it does a pretty good job of bringing back the fantastic memories and emotions of that phenomenal night. Anyway, that's just what I think.
