Festivals vs Tours

OK....

Lets look at this....

The Cure used to play at ( and sell out many) very large stadiums as headline acts, with 1 or 2 supporting acts.

Now, it seems as though they play a bunch of European festivals, where they play in front of lots of people, but not all of whom necessarily bought tickets and went to see them.

I'll do more research, but as a point... the 1989 Disintegration tour played Meadowlands Stadium, New Jersey seating capacity 76,000

The 2004 The Cure tour played Camden Tweeter center, capacity 25000

more research and posts to follow...

Re: Festivals vs Tours

A big stink was made how they sold out the Beacon so fast for Reflections last year.... 3 days in 30 minutes?

Well, the Beacon has a capacity of just under 2900.

Re: Festivals vs Tours

And if we look at contemporaries - Depeche Mode 2001 tour played MSG (2 dates)cap 19,500 and Jones Beach cap 15000

Bloodflowers in New York played Roseland ( which admittedly would have been very cool to seen them there) cap up to 3200, and Jones Beach cap 15000

Not flustered. You just have nothing to add to the thread.
Come back when you do.

Sure you can, but every time you reply to the thread, you bump it to the top. So you are promoting it, even if you don't like it.

Anything to add to the thread topic, or just more nonsense?

Do you find anything to refute my posts? Or do you think you're being funny?

Re: Festivals vs Tours

Your thread is basically about the declining popularity of The Cure. They have just been asked to headline festivals! I'd like to give them a cheer for such a long and still fruitful career. Go The Cure!

Re: Festivals vs Tours

My thread is about touring versus festivals.

You can derive what you want from it.

The Cure used to play long tours and sell out huge stadiums. And release really good sounding live recordings.

Now they play a few festival dates. And sell poorly performed and mixed live recordings.

And oddly enough, the newer festival recordings have fewer and fewer "new" Cure songs, by far more older, 'classic' Cure songs.

What conclusions might we take from this?

I'll be back tomorrow, have to work in th AM

I read your last post on the 'Jason' thread so you go ahead and play wolf in sheeps clothing. I'm looking forward to your continuation and I promise i won't interrupt you again.....,.

Re: Festivals vs Tours

asshat?

festivals are convenient for them.
they can still sell a zillion seats here in the US (in most regions)... but its got to be a logistical nightmare to set-up a Cure tour. And without the financial backing of a big record label, it has to be funded privately. Luckily, they still have the star-power to fill seats, so its not as if its very risky.

Excellent info. This demolishes 95% of 8titsToGo arguments.
The Cure is a great band but his popularity has decreased a lot since 1996 when WMS was released (coincidentally when Jason was hired).

Re: Festivals vs Tours

I thought this thread was about where you prefer to see the cure, not how many seats they can fill? so in response to that, tour every time, and I would much rather see them play in smaller venues than stadiums or arenas, larger venues are ok but everything sounds better- to me anyway- in somewhere like the RAH, sorry to interrupt your debate I'll leave you to it....

Re: Festivals vs Tours

I personally would prefer to see the Cure play in arenas, etc, and not at festivals. With festivals, you get a lot of people there for other bands playing the same day, and it's not 'Cure enough' for me ;-) Plus, I like proper toilets, not stinky port-a-loos!

Same here! :) But I decided to buy a day ticket for Optimus Alive in Lisbon (city festivals are cool) as I absolutely want to see the Cure this summer and want to visit my Portuguese friends again. And the ticket wasn't that pricey either.

Agreed! Although I would go to a festival if that were my only choice.
About the declining popularity....I don't agree with that. Look how many young people are on this forum. They have a very wide fan base from oldsters to youngsters. Besides, a band's popularity waxes and wanes over time and, really, how many bands can boast a 30 year career? Not many.

Re: Festivals vs Tours

Always I prefer a extense tour in a closed venues. The festivals are ok in summer, but are a really different atmosphere... The greatest concerts always will be in a long tours in closed venues, never in summer festivals. This is my personal opinnion...
