I need your help!!

Hi, folks - I haven't posted here in a while but this is really important.. I wanted to message all my friends on my profile, but it looked like too hard work.. :p

I know you'll all be aware of the sleeve design competition that's happening on talenthouse.com, so I won't bore you with the details..

I just ask that you take a minute of your time to vote and support the cause our wonderful band is raising funds for!

Re: I need your help!!

Good work, Fattyowls! It IS really nice to scroll through all the entries because it's like a virtual Cure art show anytime you want to lift your spirits. This one is especially nice because of all the love & happiness themes.

While I very much appreciate the sincere votes I received from people who liked my work, I'm not concerned at all about getting more votes because I look at it this way:

1 - Only the top-5 vote-getters are guaranteed to win.

2 - If you're one of the top-5, you've been deprived of the opportunity to learn if the band would have chosen your submission as one of their 45 selections. Personally, I would rather find out whether or not they liked my design as one of their top-45.

There are a lot of really phenomenal entries, too, so no one should feel badly if their work isn't chosen. Art is very subjective and personal, and people's tastes vary widely.

The fact that the site references the number of votes each person has in terms of their proximity to being in "the top 50" is a bit silly because the band are not necessarily going to choose the next 45 most popular designs. They could well choose the 45 least-popular designs. So being in the "top-50" doesn't necessarily mean anything. And having facebook friends tell their friends to vote for your submission isn't necessarily going to do much good for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The part that's going to be most important is still yet to come. That will be when it comes to actually BUYING the limited edition vinyl so that money is raised. That's when we should all be bugging people to support this.

There's a perception that the voting is so important because the clock's ticking and it's quantifiable and one can't help but take it a bit personally. But some people have gone a bit off the deep end trying to get votes (not anyone on here, and not limited to entries for The Cure). Sure, share your art - and check out all the submissions and vote for all the entries you like because you want to. It's a FANTASTIC PROGRAM AND OPPORTUNITY and it deserves a lot of attention.

I'm just appealing to the artists to please not get caught up in the quest for votes. Please understand that the votes are not the most important thing here.

Take joy in seeing all the beautiful work your favorite band's music has inspired and do what you can to help support TCT and other worthy causes.

Re: I need your help!!

There are some really good illustrations, lots of them would make a good cover, but I don't understand those people who didn't read the rules before they submitted their work, lots of the entries mention the cure, or friday I'm in love or both, all automatically discounted, all that work for nothing, some of them would have had a really good chance.

I agree! It's a real shame!

Re: I need your help!!

Yet they are still all up for votes/scrutinisation..
Somehow the competition lost a little of its credability for me after that..

Re: I need your help!!

Maybe they're only going to review them all once?

I also wonder what's going to happen with those that have incorporated images of Robert and/or the band? I can't remember if using likenesses of the band was prohibited or not, and the page that had all the guidelines is no longer visible. Some of them with little cartoons of Robert are really adorable! But Robert's image is so iconic that having it on the cover sort of spoils the "secret" of the Secret 7".

Another artist I know said he reached out to some of those people whose entries were really good but seemed to violate the rules. They apparently weren't interested in altering them, even though there was still time due to the submission deadline having been extended.

I sort of wonder if that wasn't the reason why they extended the deadline repeatedly - so people would have time to make revisions? But to your point, Fattyowls, unless those people received official notice from Talenthouse that their entries weren't valid, they probably didn't take it seriously. It would have been nice if they had done that, but still, we all had the same opportunity to read and re-read the instructions.

The other thing is that TH seems to really want to generate a LOT of hits and fb/twitter traffic from all the entries, so disqualifying those entries before the voting began would have meant less hits, "likes", and social networking traffic for them and their affiliated organizations: the bands, TCT, and Record Store Day. I don't know if that was TH's intent, or if they gave much consideration at all to how they would deal with disqualifying entries in their planning, but that's how it plays out.

At any rate, I'm sure that the band will enjoy seeing all the submissions. Hopefully that's reward enough for those people, and to all of us who entered - that we were able to share our work with the band and express how they've inspired us.

Re: I need your help!!

I entered a submission and had the guidelines saved:

The winning designs may be modified to accommodate production requirements.

Designs must not include text relating to the host artist nor song title.

Designs must be original (meaning not using third party pre-existing copyright materials).

Participants should retain their original artwork files (in 300dpi) but designs must be submitted in JPEG or PNG, max size 5MB.

Participants must use the provided template when creating their design.

I am surprised that many submissions even made it to voting since they clearly went against the rules (using "The Cure" or "Friday" or "Friday I'm In Love").

Re: I need your help!!

Hey Cats! <BIG HUGS!>

They're not going to announce the bands' selections until next Tuesday, February 7th... however... there was a very special early announcement of one of Florence and the Machine's 45 choices:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2094861/Florence-Machine-fan-20-died-cancer-immortalised-single-cover-favourite-band.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

It's so sad, but at the same time it's a great story about how healing and inspirational music can be.

Apparently Noah & The Whale submitted their 45 choices earlier this week, but it hasn't been announced whether The Cure or the other bands have finished making all 45 of their selections yet.

Sorry... I was mistaken... that submission was the top-voted entry for the Florence and the Machine Secret 7" competition. So, althought the band may well have chosen it as one of their 45, they didn't have to because it was one of the five "People's Choice" selections.
