New York Times inaccuracy re: Robert Smith's life

In today's NYT online, I saw an article referencing Italian director Paolo Sorrentino's new film "This Must Be the Place", starring Sean Penn. Apparently, Sorrentino was a huge fan of The Cure growing up, and Penn's character is an amalgam of Sorrentino and Robert Smith.

Anywho, the journalist couldn't be bothered to do some simple fact checking, stating in the article, "Mr. Sorrentino explained, adding that the story was based on his own relationship and also that of Mr. Smith, who has been married to the same woman since he was 16." No.

I emailed her letting her know that Robert and Mary were certainly not married at age 16, but met when Robert was 14 and married when he was 29. I hope the Time issues a correction. A great example of lazy journalism.

Here is a link to the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/30/movies/sean-penn-at-sundance-on-haiti-and-paolo-sorrentino-film.html?hp

there's always the rumor that Robert married Mary at the age of 16.

Oh, in all my years of loving The Cure, I've never heard that one before. Regardless, journalism, especially in a publication like the NYT, shouldn't be based on rumors.

I always thought he was martian:

Plug in 1983 (29 Earth years old) and you will see it is 16 on Mars:

Oh, riiiight! Maybe this is in Newt Gingrich's alternate reality of colonizing the moon during his (non-existent) presidency. Thanks for setting the record straight. ;)

LOL! I am sure Newton's views on marriage are equally different and 16 is the normal age to get married.
