Didn't really matter who else was up there - they could've dragged a bunch of audience members up. Robert was singing to a backing tape ( probably 1/2" 2-track).
When we mix songs, you usually make multiple passes of the "final" mix, with louder lead vocals, lower lead vocals, instrumental, and most important back then was the "T.V. Track"
This was all of the instruments plus all of the backing vocals ( the Ba Ba Ba Ba Bah Bah's) so a band can mime playing it on TV while the lead singer can actually sing. Sometimes with the same effects ( reverb, delay, backwards reverb - as on the 4Play Out tour) so it sounds fairly close to the recording.
Really nice vocal performance, but the music was just that - a TV Track. And extended mix, with a tiny taste of the horns that would be in the remix, but definitely not played live.
