Looking for an alternative christmas....

This would usually be too early for me to think of anything to do with christmas, but needs must, where I work we don't normally have music playing but christmas is a non stop loop of the same christmas tunes 24 hours. I like all the traditional songs, well mostly, but I need a,or several back up cd's,so any suggestions for indie tunes that even just mention christmas would be welcome, the fools I work with think they are safe with no cure tunes, I may not include them all but Hey You is a sure thing, plus Deep-pearl jam....waiting patiently for suggestions...please

Re: Looking for an alternative christmas....

Are you looking for upbeat songs? I'd pick something controversial, like Killing In The Name by Rage Against The Machine ;-) If it was good enough to beat the X factor crap to Xmas no 1 it's good enough for an alt-Xmas playlist ;-)

I had never heard this, lovely song but what is it to do with christmas?, listened to it on youtube, it sounds like he sings christmas dreams but the lyrics say chrysalis dreams, was that it? thanks anyway, then again on a cd who'd know I could bluff it!

Hmm, might be chrysalis dreams now you've said... I thought it was Christmas but chrysalis makes more sense lol!

How about "The Snakepit" by The Cure? "Well we're a mile under the ground, and I'm thinking that it's Christmas.."
Or...I think Herb Alpert's Christmas album is hilarious. It's all goofy trumpet music and it's almost deranged! I think it's good for a laugh :)

I'd forgotten about The Snakepit mentioning christmas, I think christmas must be RS favourite holiday, that makes 7 songs, that I can think of, that mention christmas. Listened to some of Herb Alpert's album not really what I was looking for , but I liked it! especially jingle bells and let it snow,a work colleague plays trumpet in a brass band so she will appreciate it! now I need some tunes for the metal head, not too many though, not my type of music at all... and thanks for suggestions.

Mmm I think so,
Hey You..yes you the one who looks like christmas
Other Voices... come around at christmas
Strange Attraction...a christmas card in sepia
Last dance...but christmas falls late now
Lets go to bed..laughing at the christmas lights
and as Blacklilly said The Snakepit, I'm sure there is another but I can't think, he describes someone as looking like tinsel maybe thats it! Anyway I 've been warned I can't just put a cure cd on only one other cure fan where I work!

I think RSX likes Christmas too, so many songs mentioning it :)The Herb Alpert "Jingle Bell Rock" is my favorite, it's soo silly and turns very Burlesque-sounding at the end! Perhaps your friend can try playing a few Herb Alpert songs? Sorry, I can't think of any songs catering to the metal heads at Christmas time :)"The Snakepit"..great song. Maybe RS could do a few Christmas songs for us?

I think she'd do a great version of Herb Alpert's tunes, back in work this week I'll ask her!! I think RS should do an acoustic version of some songs and post them here for our ears only, a great xmas pressie for the forum, I love Friday I'm in love that way and would love to hear some others.

Oh, I have another song. How about "Merry Christmas (Don't Wanna Fight)" by The Ramones? It's upbeat! "The Christmas Waltz"..is good choice. Frank Sinatra does a version of that song, it's really beautiful. I will let you know if I think of more :)

I asked Bel about playing jingle bell rocks, she plays the cornet though not the trumpet, my mistake! still she's going to have a listen, now you've put the idea in my mind I hope she does play for us, let you know.

I'm glad I could help! There are other songs/bands to include, but they are pretty vulgar and offensive, you may not wanna go that route (especially if little ones are present)! You have a good playlist I think! have fun!

I will definitely see if I can find that. I am really trying to get in a christmas mood, so fare baking cookies, and decorating has not really help, and I am still sick of christmas songs from last year.
But maybe this will do the trick. :-)

Never heard a christmas song by Taylor Swift and she's always on the radio here, sad or happy song?, but you should put some tracks on a disc yourself for work I was really surprised how many good tracks there were, cos they are never played in the shops or radio, if you have to listen to your colleagues rubbish tunes only fair they get to hear great ones!!

Just listened to them, beautiful voices, never heard them before, thanks, the christmas songs are really lovely.Don't know if you are anywhere near Copenhagen, I was lucky enough to visit a few years ago and had a great time, but what I was really excited about was the hotel we stayed in had a pillar in the foyer with brass plagues of all the bands who have stayed there, including David Bowie and The Cure, and for some reason the only English channel in the hotel played The Cure every day in concert I loved it.. few weeks yet to worry about feeling christmassy haven't put my decorations up yet,so your ahead of me anyway!

I used to listen to them some 10 years ago, but haven´t really followed them lately. The male in the band, used to look a bit like a young Robert.
It´s funny how some danish bands that are actually good never make it outside Denmark and some bands that are not that lovely (my opinion) gets huge (eg. aqua)

I do live in Copenhagen, actually just behind the building where the cure play in 2008? (I think). which hotel were you staying at? sounds a bit expensive. maybe I should go for a short visit there :-)

I think it was a sofitel hotel, it was about 6 years ago, opposite the Tivoli gardens, outside was painted black, inside the walls were painted with tales of Hans Christian Anderson, very beautiful.I don't know how much it cost as our original hotel had cancelled our room by mistake and then was fully booked, so they moved us there at no extra cost! Lucky us.

The music is piped in over a loudspeaker alll day loong! I try to tune it out, but some songs still seem to get through! I can't bring my own music unfortunately..but..after 4pm the music changes to 80's and early 90's. Sometimes I hear "Lovesong" and a few songs by Bowie and The Ramones..so that more than makes up for it!
