It is certainly "different" ;)
I wouldn't own it if I never liked it!

Yes, whoever edited/mixed it is like some sort of genius.... ;P

Also, I like that it celebrates Porl's return!

Re: Festival 2005

I have a very hard time choosing Cure favorites - I just love their entire body of work so much. Festival 2005 definitely has MANY of my favorite performances. The guys have so much great energy - it's really exciting to watch!

It's a wonderful "celebration" as you said - of Porl returning, of their amazing music, and of their relationship with their audience. It's a bit of a love-fest in that regard! There is definitely a very happy vibe throughout Festival 2005.

The editing is especially great on this DVD. I appreciate how they blended footage from so many different sources to give us the full "flavor" of that whole summer festival tour. It had to take forever to piece all those clips together in such a coherent way!!!! The editing on Never Enough is especially cool.

I'm really glad you started this topic because it's a great, great DVD.

I love how they gave each song a special, individual "treatment"... you know what I mean? They put a lot of thought (or seemed to) into matching the images to the music in each song. It's not just a straight concert documentary style where you couldn't tell which song they were playing if you turned off the audio.

As usual, I'd be hard-pressed to name a favorite performance on this DVD, but I would note that the version of "Signal To Noise" on the DVD is really fantastic! That isn't a song you hear a lot, so it's a special treat.

Do you have a particular favorite song on this DVD?

Yes, exactly. Each song got it's own treatment.

Um, YES, I do have a particular favourite on this DVD-- Fascination Street. The performance is great, but I especially love the effects. I love the different coloured lights. There's lots of layering of images going on and I LOVE love love the ferris wheel image. Very fitting I think. Which I think sort of brings us back to your comment about watching without the sound and being able to tell what song was playing.

It's just not an ordinary concert DVD which can get kind of boring.

And yes, interesting that Signal To Noise is in black and white (and sometimes distorted and faded) when the whole DVD is in colour. This only proves that much thought was given for each song.

The ferris wheel is a really great image for that song! I had forgotten about that one.

It's been a few weeks since I last watched it, but those scary ant and red graphics on "Us or Them" also stand out in my mind. I think that's the only song where there were "external" images layered on top of those of the performance, but it's very effective. It seems to add a flavor of anger and violence to the song.

That's what's so cool about The Cure... they don't just give you a straightforward concert DVD (which, given their amazing live performances, would be MORE than adequate). Robert, I think, spends the extra time to extend their art throughout their projects. Whether it's the individual treatment of each song on Festival or the extra interviews and hidden goodies on Trilogy, we get special gifts from them each time. I can't wait for whatever is next! :)

Re: Festival 2005

When I bought Festival last year, I only had one Cure cd which was Disintegration. My son had just told me about the Cure concert being advertised on tv. When I checked out ticket prices on stubhub.com I really didn't know if I wanted to spend alot of money. So while at the music store the ONLY cd they had was KMKMKM. I grabbed that and then also saw this dvd. I am so glad I decided to buy it. From the start I knew I needed to go to the concert. But as soon as I saw FTEOTDGS, well I was hooked. I bought the best tickets I could afford for me and my son. We were just to the left of Porl, three rows up. Best concert EVER! So, that is why I love this dvd. :-)

I also LOVE Festival 2005. I like the songs they put on it. Like everyone else, the colors and strobe lights and environment sure make it unique.
I will say that The Trilogy is what catapulted me into Cure oblivion. :)

Yes! A haunting version of The Drowning Man! A Forest was perfect, and Push had the right energy. I really loved FTEOTDGS too. Sigh...

Re: Festival 2005

I really like how the song 'End' is played. It's sped up alot, but doesn't lose the essence of the actual song. But then again, this may be simply because I LOVE End as a song, and any alternate versions of it would have to butcher it completely in order for it not to be on my favourites list...
Festival's great, but watching Trilogy was like a religious experience for me. And I was watching it in my living room...
If I'd actually been there...

Re: Festival 2005

Mmm.. song choice and the simple fact that Porl was back is what made me pick this up..
I think it's having Porl back that has made them a bit more adventurous with their setlists of late..
For some reason in the last lineup they didn't stray to far from the staple hits and well known songs which seems crazy as they had more people and more instruments.. :p
I'm sure there's method to the madness of stripping it down again..

Not that I've had the pleasure, but I've been told Trilogy in 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound (Bluray) is the duck's nuts!
