Two Concerts I went to ('89 compared with '08)

just my opinion! : ) in '89 they played the Sports Arena
and '08 they played the Cox arena, both San Diego, Ca.

Soundwise, I found both concerts excellent. Tops. Numero Uno. The best.

in '08, along with the combination of sounds that make my brain rejoice,
(and feet, and heart!) we got to enjoy RS dancing : D and flirting with
the crowd, : D, Jason smiling : )
Keeping one's eyes open made it much more fun. : )
Simon looking handsome and Porl really fun to watch as he rocked...

However, I also still savor the memory of the '89 show in that their sound was
so wonderful...(my first Cure show and I had a ton of their music at home
and could sing along to every song) and we were seated up pretty high
and away, and since they just simply *played*, although I know that feat isn't by
any means simple, I only mean there was no posturing or playing to the crowd;
it was lovely in it's beauty and coldness. I could close my eyes and just ingest
the sounds and not miss a thing. The music is where the warmth came from,
along with RS's voice.

So I can't say which concert was better! Both totally rocked!!

Re: Two Concerts I went to ('89 compared with '08)

I've heard a few bootleg songs of the band in 1989 (what i year, i was only 7!) and even though i can't say i know for sure but there was a really raw sound to it, might have been the equipment, but RS voice had a different edge to it, almost sharper and more determination, also the way the band worked, seemed alot more forceful, like the were really rocking it with all the could muster.

Hi Antonia! : ) Oh, yes, they were definitely giving it their all...remember that it was going to be their last tour, that may have been a factor...Cos they obviously truly thought it would be their last. (And I'm so glad it wasn't!!) : D

Ooh, I'm gonna look up some bootlegs now, thanks to you!! : )

I first saw The Cure in 1986 and they were so fantastic, I was hooked for life. I have to say that, in my opinion, they are even more amazing now! They've become so much better and have such great energy... for me these last two concerts in Las Vegas and at Coachella were transformative. They really put everything into their music and it really comes through to the audience. It's a wonderful gift they give us every time they perform. I can't wait to see them again!

My first Cure concert was 1981 Portsmouth Guildhall, my latest (but not last!!!) 2009 O2 Arena for the well deserved "God-Like Genius" award.

Both awesome and all the ones in between as awesome. I would say they get better, but you can't better what was already the best.

Wow! That's really fantastic! What a wonderful thing to have seen them so early on and watched them progress through the years! I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments! Thanks for telling us about it... I'd love to hear more about your impressions of any of the shows if ever have the inclination. I never get tired of hearing Cure stories! :)

Lucky you, I would have loved to see them in the early 80's, if timetravel was possible it's definitely one of the events I would like to travel to, a 1980/1981 Cure concert.

My first one was in 1985, it was fabulous, and so was any other concert I have seen since then. I also have very fond memories of the Disintegration tour, I saw them a good few times on that tour and they were brilliant at the time.

Thank you for your kind comments, it's not been a hard task, I still get butterflies when they announce a tour, or release of some new material, sometimes I feel I go back to being in my early teens hearing them for the first time.

Re: Two Concerts I went to ('89 compared with '08)

I saw them in '89, '92, and '09 in Houston each time. I was really nervous about the 2009 show because it had been such a long time since I had seen them. I think I was scared I would be disappointed in them as so many bands disintigrate with age and time. I was so fantastically wrong! I think they get better every time I see them. Robert was more engaged with the audience which is really endearing to me. I cannot wait to see them again. They totally rocked "A Forest" and "Killing and Arab" during the encores. I was pregnant in '92 with my daughter, Alexis, when I went to the '92 show. Guess what? I took her to the 2009 show--her first concert. It was like coming full circle.

Hi all.
Boasting time lol !!
My first Cure gig was 1978 Carshalton Festival, South London. Tickets were, I believe, £2-00.
Small stage, close up, no "Cure style", just 3 boys with normal haircuts, pissing rain, cool tunes !!
3 Imaginary Boys just released, ohh memories.
I looked just like Paul Cooke (Sex Pistols drummer) and was always being asked for my autograph, which was often embarrassing).
At one point in the gig, Robert looked straight at me, pointed, and announced "This one's for Paul" !!
Wow, did I feel big, and I have never forgotten that, and grown up with them ever since, seeing them live loads of times. Best gig since has to be Wembley Arena 89, 2 rows from the front , sitting next to Siouxsie Sioux, it doesn't get much better than that,

Love,
Gabba

WOW!!! That's truly an amazing and funny story.I'm getting a bit jealous imagining it all, but i've been to my fair share of concerts.

Re: Two Concerts I went to ('89 compared with '08)

My first concert was July 1995- totally amazing dreamy experience. My most recent concert was May 2008, finally got to see Porl play live :) I've been to other concerts in between which also rocked... some i was sitting in the "nosebleed" section. But i really got to see the cure's talent up close at a Much Music taping in or around 1996 - i couldn't believe they could sound soooooooooo perfect live.......and there was such an intense electrifying atmosphere it was thick you could almost taste it... the stadiums really don't do the cure's music justice all that feedback... but i've enjoyed them and can't wait for another album and tour.

Re: Two Concerts I went to ('89 compared with '08)

I first saw the Cure in 1986 in Dallas Texas at a bowling alley. So bizarre! Following that in 1987 in Reunion Arena, Dallas, Texas. The gig was great and wierdly seen in the US press as the 'New Wave' alongside acts that had nohing in common ie Euyrthmics, Thomas Dolby, Howard Jones, Crowded House, INXS etc means they knew nothing really - US market??!! I remember thinking how bizarre they lump all these acts together! Either way Cure came out on top, obviously but also a problem for the Cure as they became more commercial and in my opinion less credible. My fav album is Pornography I guess that says it all. Post punk was slow on the marketing up-take with the US and needless to say that the US market didn't quite get it!
