Bestival 2011

Thanks for a great night guys. Loved the set and you sounded great as usual.

"Killing Another" - never heard that one before :-)

This is the first time I have seen 40,000 twenty somethinges in fancy dress dancing to The Cure songs. About 200 Robert Smiths walking around and a 15 foot Robert Smith puppet, it was quite surreal. There were some people camping with us who had never heard of The Cure and also some older guys and gals who had never been to a Cure gig. It made me smile so much to hear them all rave about what they had just witnessed on stage.

Brilliant - and thanks again.

See you again soon I hope.

Re: Bestival 2011

Tell us more!

Been looking at the Youtube stuff, I think the sound is great. Seen comments about Roger and the keyboards giving back the "wall of sound" but for me it is more that Robert can be more sparse, considered; he doesn't have to fill. I love Porl's playing and like that "heavy" guitar within the Cure, but it doesn't feel quite right.

Not sure about Simon's mini bass, that looks a bit wrong somehow!

Re: Bestival 2011

I'm sorry you couldn't make it Dave! They were phenomenal. Much as I love the Thunderbirds, I liked the look of Simon's new basses and he seemed really happy playing them, so that makes me happy too. I thought Jason's hair looked really cool, as well! It suits him. :) It had to be hard joining a band so well-known for their large hair...

Here are some of my photos (below).

Here are a few more just for good measure, including some that show those new basses a bit better. I'm sorry everyone couldn't go who wanted to.

Beautiful pics Lovecat! That's the same view I had in Cleveland back in 2008! Great to see Roger again!

Re: Bestival 2011

Great pictures!

I was there as well. Right in the front opposite Roger. The show was well worth the trip and the long day in the rain and wind with only a light cardigan on. Hahaha.

I didn't take 1 picture, but the show is forever etched in my mind! Listening to The Cure under an almost full moon was ...spellbinding.

I loved the setlist. I'd been dying to hear Fascination Street and Close to Me for so long...I had a good feeling that it would be the night.

Thank you Robert, Simon, Roger and Jason! <3

Re: Bestival 2011

Thanks, guys! It was so cold and windy that night - and yet their set went by SO FAST!!! They sounded great and seemed really happy to be performing again - and I think the set list reflected that, with more lighthearted songs like FIIL, The Lovecats, WCIBY? and Hot Hot Hot!!! The Caterpillar was a special treat!

And Robert was funny! What was it he said about the Bestival guitars? They "weighed as much as fucking house?" ...something to that effect. It was great to see them all so happy and in a playful mood. Robert's voice was very moving, as always.

The keyboard levels were a bit high for my taste on a couple of songs... that was a little disappointing because I could see Robert and Simon rocking out but couldn't really hear them - especially on Play For Today. That's one of my very favorite songs. The bass is the part (for me) that really makes it so exciting - and I want to hear it, so that was a little disappointing. I felt like the keyboard levels were a bit overpowering on that one and it took away some of the song's edge. It was still good to hear, though. A Forest and Disintegration sounded amazing!

I loved Open, Primary and The Hungry Ghost, especially. Simon really tore it up on Primary! They were phenomenal! It was a bit surprising that they didn't play The Kiss- because they always seem to play that one, but it was fine without it. I was really glad to hear them get through Jumping Someone Else's Train, Grinding Halt, 10:15 Saturday Night and Killing Another because those songs were interrupted the last 2 times I saw them.

It was a magical evening but it was over much too quickly! I can't wait to hear their new material and see them play live again!

Re: Bestival 2011

The coolest thing about Bestival was how much love there was for The Cure - there were so many little references to the band and their music all around. All sorts of people came from all over to see them... including lots of families.

This has to be one of my favorite photos that I've ever taken because this little girl was just so darling. She was so happy to be there with her parents to see The Cure and she was an absolute sweetheart...

Re: Re: Bestival 2011

I like new Simon´s basses and Roger´s return but I miss Porl a lot, especially in songs like Push and Just Like Heaven, sory Robert but these songs are for two guitars necessarily, well if you want it, I can play guitar with The Cure at live (what fucking amazing dream.
