Re: Favourite Era Of The Cure?

Since I have such a hard time picking Cure favorites, I'm going to make it easy on myself and say... The Simon Gallup Era!

This is going to sound like a sacrilege, but it's true. I've gone all these years without ever buying "Three Imaginary Boys" or "The Top", and I actually never even gave it much thought as to why. It wasn't as though there weren't any songs I liked on those albums. I guess (for me) they lacked a certain overall feeling that compels me to listen to any other Cure album again and again all the way through.

Hmmmmm.... something was missing on those albums. I didn't consciously decide to not buy those albums just because Simon wasn't in the band when they were cut. It was truly subconscious, but it makes sense. For me, Simon is a HUGE part of the Cure sound that I love so much. He doesn't overplay, yet his parts are so effective. Plus, he's written some of my most-loved music. Some of my very favorite Cure songs started out as Simon's demos.

Musically, I love the old stuff as well as the newer stuff... there's something for every mood or sentiment. I can't wait to hear the next stuff!!!!

As far as live performances, the present is the best possible time because they play better than ever and seem to have even more energy! What other band plays for 3+ hours??? *listens... hears nothing* The Cure is the best band on the planet!

Re: Favourite Era Of The Cure?

That is so difficult to answer. I really love The Top era. I think The Top is probably my favorite album overall. However, I also love Seventeen Seconds through Pornography. There are qualities from each of the eras that are special. I think look-wise, 1984 is my favorite year for Robert. For Simon, I really like 1992. For music though, I can't really choose. But if I had to, it would be 1984 for The Top.

disintegration and wish

guess the best lineup was with 3 guitars (wish). roger was still replaceable. perry played guitar AND keyboard.

i wish perry would return...that would be awesome and they had more options on playing different songs ands sounds...but im still glad porl is back.

late 70's

late 80's

I have been a Cure fan for over 25 years now and I haven't seen much of a change in Robert Smith's trademark look with his smeared red lipstick, black eyeliner, pale complexion, and artfully disheveled black hair. Still hot for just turning the big 5-0 in April of 2009. My favorite Cure era would be the Post-Punk era the late 70's to the mid 80's.

Three Imaginary Boys (1979)
Seventeen Seconds (1980)
Faith (1981)
Pornography (1982)
The Top (1984)
The Head on the Door (1985)

Agree on this one.

My first Cure album was the 2004 album so I started to get into The Cure around then, so the 00s play a part in my favourites as well.

Re: Favourite Era Of The Cure?

Okay, dark brown, black. Robert Smith described his hair "very, very dark brown. So dark one could almost say it's black. In fact, it does look black, but it's not. It's very, very, very...dark, dark brown. Almost blacky brown. Or browny black." His words. It's been black and dark brown in the past. Maybe you're thinking most recently. I am talking about over a 25-year span where his hair has been black in the past.

I forgot to add, but don't know if these really count cause only Robert was involved and not all the members from The Cure, but of course there's The Glove (Blue Sunshine) Awsome album, by the way, And Hyaena (guitarist) both around 1983.

Re: Favourite Era Of The Cure?

I think my favourite era that draw me first to The Cure was Bloodflowers (and Wild Mood Swings, but there was a big gap in tastes) , then i went backwards, starting from the first to the last.
It was cool, hearing them sound hearing grow in a hyper-speed, going through the albums, as a listener who was getting into them and hearing them process in sound and confidence...i think everything after Bloodflowers is the era i feel most comfortable listen to as the band seem so much more at ease and functionial...like they are now The Cure and thats it, no if and or buts.

Re: Favourite Era Of The Cure?

1979 - 1982 saw them 3 times live, listened to as many radio shows that would play them, caught the bus from school at lunchtime to a record shop in Fareham Precinct with my saved up dinner money to by their records, I liked the first few singles but A Forest was the real hook for me and Pornography sealed the deal.

Re: Favourite Era Of The Cure?

Different eras for different reasons, really..

In terms of musicality (yes it's a word, I googled it!) I would say in the lead up and during Wild Mood Swings..

Despite all the turmoil of people's comings and goings, some really great work was produced and would be when Robert was at his best lyrically and melodically. The rest of the line up was reasonably fresh so productivity was very high..
It came just at the wrong moment with Britpop and Grunge coming to the forefront of the music happenings at that time..

In terms of actual line up I would say Wish.. Anyone who's seen "Playout" will agree that that line up was definiative in the fact there was a great rapport between them. Most of them had been there since The Head On The Door, they'd all been to Robert's wedding, they came out on the other side of Disintegration and the Lol ordeal so there was obviously a great history between them..

Obviously there would be a soft spot for the Faith/Pornography era for the sheer rawness of emotion in it all and the fact that Robert and Simon "lived to tell the tale" after all the drugs and breakdowns..

Re: Favourite Era Of The Cure?

The 'gothic' era, as someone described it; Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography are just amazing to listen to. I think it's about the most eloquent descent into darkness I've ever heard.
Disintegration sort of stands in an era of its own, doesn't it? It's quite unlike Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, but not as harsh and gritty as Wish. Still, I love it.
The 90's era with Wish and associated b-sides is another favourite, and Bloodflowers is also pretty good. Only thing with that is that you have Wild Mood Swings in the middle, which doesn't really fit in.

Re: Favourite Era Of The Cure?

The era from 17 seconds up to Wish is my favorite. Things slowed down after that , one album in 4 years as opposed to 1-2 years.
Makes each album feel like a whole era upon itself. (3 in 12 years in instead of 9 in 9 years).

But I feel that with 4:13 a new era has possibly begun. If Robert can get the dark album out early 2011 it would be phenomenal.
