Cool CURE Guitars & Basses!!! <3

I love beautiful guitars, and it just so happens that the guys have had some very pretty ones over the years… including some with some very interesting stickers and notes on them!

If anyone else has other cool Cure guitar pix, drop 'em in! We love pretty guitars and basses!

Schecter Robert Smith Ultracure

Here’s one of Robert with his Schecter Robert Smith Ultracure from the April 2009 show at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas

If you click on the photo, choose to view other sizes and zoom in on the original size photograph, you can see that he has a sticker of some words from “The Hungry Ghost” in a cool white font just underneath the pickups:

SWALLOW
DOUBT
AS THE HUNGER
GROWS
MAKE BELIEVE IT’S
LIKE
NO-ONE
KNOWS

Just to the right of his hand, there’s another sticker with words from “It’s Over” in a different font in red that reads:

NO
I CAN’T
REMEMBER
ANYTHING I
DID OR SAID
OR HOW I LOST
ANOTHER
LIFE

He also has the word “SCREAM” on the top right corner of this guitar.

Schecter Robert Smith RS-1000 Acoustic Guitar

This is such a pretty guitar! I love how Robert’s guitars all have the beautiful stars and moons pearl inlay in the necks! For more details about Robert & Porl’s Schechter guitars, you can visit http://www.schecterguitars.com/
Click on “Guitars”, then “Ultra Series”, then “Ultracure”. Once you’re looking at the Ultracure, you’ll see thumbnails for the beautiful RS-1000 acoustic and Porl’s gorgeous Corsair on the right.

Robert Smith

The first one is a close-up of one of Robert's guitars in 2007. You can see the stickers, but you can also see he has some notes to himself taped across the top as well. You can see it better in the second shot. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has to refer back to notes...

These are from: http://www.flickr.com/photos/drjustinedwards/
The notes say these shots were taken on August 17, 2007. She has a real gift for concert photography.

I think this Thunderbird is so pretty. I know I've seen some closer pictures of it, and I've seen a shot of it with a sticker on of the back of it also. I'll try to find it.

This one is originally from the photographer at http://www.flickr.com/photos/buschenhenke/, but I pulled it off www.picturesofyou.com:

Gorgeous White Thunderbird!!!!

I apologize in advance for posting this photo without a citation because I DON'T KNOW WHO TOOK IT. I saved it to my desktop at some point and I've been trying to find the source for days to no avail. If anyone knows who the original source for this photo is, please tell me because I would obviously like to give that person credit for their outstanding work.

This *might* be my very favorite of Simon's basses, though I don't think he's played it in a while.

Si, why don't you play this one anymore? It's soooo pretty!!!

What does everyone else think? It's gorgeous isn't it?

Robert's old Fender Jazzmaster

It is a very beautiful guitar design- and I like the tortoise shell pickguard. I don't know if you've seen it, but there's a really nice section on Jazzmasters (from the 50th anniversary) on the Fender site. They have a really cool interview with Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth (one of my faves), talking about what he and Thurston Moore really love about their Jazzmasters and how they use them. There's also one with Elvis Costello: http://www.fender.com/jazzmaster50th/

The first two images are from www.thecure.sk and are both from 1979. The following three images are from www.afoolisharrangement.com. The first is from 1980 and the next two are from 1981.

Isn't it a beauty? I guess the band donated a Schecter RS-1000 acoustic for auction to aid in the West Memphis Three's legal defense fund in December 2007. All the guys signed it and Porl even embellished it with a unique Cure logo.

Hearings for new trials for two of The West Memphis Three will resume on August 10th. For more information, see http://www.wm3.org/

Hey thanks a lot for your comments! He used several basses in Trilogy, but I'm having a hard time remembering the one from the Pornography set off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure one of them was a Jack Casady - for the Bloodflowers set maybe?

I think he had a pretty black Fender P-Bass when they originally recorded Pornography, then when he came back for THOTD I think he had switched to a Musicman Stingray (I love the way those feel). I'll go back and check out the DVD tonight after work and post some more pics for you. Thanks again!

OK Mr. Gravey... I apologize for my lengthy absence, but I've been quite busy at work this week and have also opened up a virtual Cure Pub in the General Forum that has kept me pretty busy! ;-) I found some information and some cool photos for you. I hope it's helpful and that you enjoy the photos.

Back to the business of beautiful basses...

Simon's basses... the best sources of information on this subject are, in my opinion, www.wikicure.com and his 2004 interview in Bass Player magazine. Wikicure is in French, though, but with the help from Yahoo Babelfish or the Google translation tool, you should be able to get the gist of it, even if you don't speak French. Wikicure has a LOT of great info about all the guys' instruments and gear, actually. It's a VERY INFORMATIVE SITE. Here are the links:

http://www.wikicure.com/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Basses
http://www.picturesofyou.us/04/04-10-bassplayer-simon-interview.htm

Before we get into the Trilogy basses, I'd like to correct/elaborate on my previous comment about which bass he used originally for Pornography. I'll add the Trilogy basses in separate posts below this one. It turns out he originally recorded Pornography with a Rickenbacker 4003 (Jetglo finish). He also used it on tour along with a black Fender P-Bass with a black pickguard. Here's a photo of Simon performing around that time (from wikicure.com) and another of a 1973 Rickenbacker 4003 in Jetglo. The inlay in the fretboard looks gorgeous in that color photo!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your saying that!

I have to agree with you about the Dick Knight... it's beautiful! The more I see of the Rickenbacker 4003s, the more I'm starting to like the look of those as well. There are some really gorgeous vintage Rickenbackers out there!

I know you're not crazy about the Thunderbirds, but I found this special Zebra Wood model today and I thought it was so cool. Gibson did a limited production run of only 400 in 2007. In the first photo - where the stain looks quite a bit darker - I think it looks really sharp!

Fender Bass VI

The Fender VI has been a key Cure instrument as early as 1981, when Robert used it for several songs on the Faith album. From what I've read,
he's used a Fender VI on at least one song on every album through 2004's The Cure. Simon has also played a Fender VI on occasion.

Robert has had a number of these throughout the years and they were featured prominently in the Trilogy concert film. In the
Disintegration set, he had a black Fender VI with black pickguard. He used two more for the Bloodflowers set - one with flower stickers
(The Last Day Of Summer) and one without (Where The Birds Always Sing, The Loudest Sound).

The first image is from www.picturesofyou.us, the next three are from www.wikicure.com, and the last two are from www.blu-ray.com:

CORRECTION- I was looking back at these photos this morning and realized that the last one of Robert
(directly above) IS NOT a Fender VI at all - it's a Jazzmaster! Sorry about that! Robert played a Jazzmaster
during the Pornography set of Trilogy. It's black with a tortoise-shell pickguard like the Bloodflowers set Bass VI,
but it's clearly a Jazzmaster - sorry about that - the Blu-ray.com photos are little dark and I obviously wasn't
paying close enough attention.

I've found some more interesting things about the Fender VI. According to Wikicure.com, Robert used
a Fender VI to record "Primary" ("Faith and "Descent" also) and on the Picture Tour to support Faith.
However, for the band's Top of The Pops appearance, Robert and Simon used matching P-Basses
for "Primary" (see Fender Precision Bass above). Wikicure.com has a whole list
of Cure songs that were recorded using a Fender VI - it's quite extensive - with Disintegration being the album most flavored by it.
Robert's parts on all but 3 Disintegration songs were recorded using a Fender VI. Here's the link to that list of Cure songs
recorded with a Fender VI:

http://www.wikicure.com/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Titres-Cure-Bass-VI

The Fender VI is a 6-string bass that has a shorter scale (30") than a P-Bass, a tremolo and 3 pickups.
It was discontinued in 1975, but in 2006, Fender did a special run of them. The Fender VI also has thinner
strings, which Fender continues to market. So, if you see a Fender VI, it's most likely a vintage model.
On the second of my screenshots (above), you can see Robert's non-flowered Black/tortoise-shell Bass VI
looks a little hacked up along the top edge.

Here's another image from www.wikicure.com of Robert playing a Fender VI in 1989 (this one is
especially for you, Arsenicsea, because he looks like such a cute little goth boy here):

I hadn't realized that Robert had been playing a 6-string bass for the "guitar" parts on a lot of those songs, so it was really cool to find that out. Robert is definitely a bass-loving composer and musician. I read in an interview that he once said something to the effect of: he was born "with a groovy bassline" playing in his head... I'll try to find it. Anyway, I just love the moodiness of the bass, and I love how it's layered into Cure songs so beautifully.

My Join the Dots finally came and I'm poring over the book that comes with it, picking up little bits of info I didn't know.

I'm so happy for you... I love JTD!!!! It's full of great information and photo- and some of the most beautiful music. I love reading about their creative process and their opinions about certain songs. It's really a wonderful gift from the band to Cure lovers! I know you're going to have a blast pouring through it all!

It's almost too much to take in, even though I know the earlier ones as I had the 7" vinyl singles in my collection. It takes me 5 or 6 listens to get my head around a single album, and there's about 5 album's worth of material here!

This is the other bass... I'm not sure which one of the two has the sticker on the back. I think it was a St. George's Cross. This image is from www.thecure.sk:

This is the one that has the St. George's Cross sticker on the back. I'm just watching Festival 2005 and this is the bass guitar that's most prominent in that footage. I'll try to take a screen shot of the back of it (with the sticker) later and post it.

Here's that sticker...

Simon Gallup - Festival 2005

HA! Found an even better shot of the backside of that bass! Not only does he have a partial flag of England, but he's got a large decal from Dirt magazine, there too! This one is from www.picturesofyou.us
