| thetopper | PlainsongI just wondered while I was trying to make my own mind up, which version everyone likes of this incredible song? The synthy '89 Disintegration version which is truly majestic or the new guitar-only version which I heard played at the Wembley '08 gig. Both are pretty special. |

Re: Plainsongthetopper wrote: I haven't heard the guitar-only version, but I do love this song! I love how Sofia Coppola integrated the '89 version into Marie Antoinette. It really does have the "majestic" quality you mentioned with the keys. It was very fitting for that post-coronation scene.

Re: Re: Re: Plainsongthetopper wrote: OMG! Thank you for that link! I just watched it and it seriously made me start crying. Porl's guitar part is so beautiful! I love the shots of the band in that video - it's really great! I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the '89 version was majestic. I think the guitar version is more personal and is extremely touching in that respect. If I have to choose, I'd say I prefer the new guitar version! Regardless of the arrangement, though, it is a magnificent song.

Re: Re: Re: Re: PlainsongLA Lovecat wrote:thetopper wrote: I agree! Yeah the guitar version is more intimate. But yeah, both are incredible, just sums up the strength of the song and of the strength of the band. If you didn't manage to get to see the Cure or any of their stuff from their 4tour, they did loads of guitar versions of established cure tracks from the synth era. You should check those out too, they're all pretty awesome! :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Plainsongthetopper wrote: I can't get enough of them (NEVER ENOUGH hehe)! I've been going through withdrawals since I saw them at Coachella and in Las Vegas. I was right up front for both shows and their energy was astounding. That Coachella show was the most amazing thing I've ever seen... and I've seen a lot. They give us all so much great energy... I just hope they get enough good energy back that they still enjoy what they do and that they continue. :)

Re: Plainsongplainsongs good..but i like prayers for rain especially. I just started getting into the cure. Its funny cause i started out with "the cure" cd. It was excelent but not as good as disintigration. it doesnt get better than disintigration..or maybe it does because it is the cure and i havent heard all of it..yet ha. But i like talking about them so post other stuff ;)

Re: Re: PlainsongRyanHolmgren wrote: Well you've picked a nice and diverse band to become interested in. The Cure album and Disintegration couldn't be more removed from each other I think. I like The Cure but Disintegration is incredible. You'll hear plenty of people agreeing with you on Disintegration. It's considered The Cure's masterpiece by a lot of people. If you want some pointers, check out the previous 2 albums to Disintegration as well, The Head on the Door and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.

Re: Re: PlainsongFreshlysquashedfly wrote: Wow, how cool! I would be so stoked to hear Plainsong playing on the radio. Do you know what kind of station it was? About the guitar version: I wasn't aware of it until I saw them live last year in San Diego. I think Porl does a great job, though I wouldn't mind hearing the keyboards again. I agree with Chris Ott's review: "Disintegration stands alone for its preamble: scant few albums released in the 1980s can boast an opener as grand as "Plainsong", the most breathtaking, shimmering anthem the band ever recorded."(pitchfork.com) I saw them again at Coachella 09 which was an amazing show. If I ever get the chance to see them again, I hope they decide to start opening with Plainsong again . :)

Nme, have you heard of the magazine? they awarded The Cure with the godlike genius award earlier this year? anyway its the radio station from them.
