A Foolish Arrangement

Hi all.
I've loved this song from the moment I've heard it. It's on disc 3 of the Rarities set, and to me, it stands right up there with This Twilight Garden and 2 Late as the real gems of the Join The Dots set. However, I've never really heard anyone talk about it, which is a shame because there aren't many songs that can be as enigmatic, as lyrical, as this one and still tug on my heartstrings.
Personally, this is one of the few songs whose meaning still eludes me. There's a sense of something elusive, something fleeting and beautiful, and the way the song describes 'Christabel' also strikes a note close to home, but I'm not really sure. Any insights? Thoughts? What does this song mean to you?

P.S: I hope the writing doesn't come off as pretentious; I've been told I sound it sometimes. I'm a writer, so I guess I can't really help it. :S

I absolutely love this song too! In the liner in Join The Dots, it says that one source for this song was Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem 'Christobel'. Have you read it? What do you think of it? I loved the poem although it was long. :0)

Ahh, so that IS where I read it!!
I was racking my brains trying to figure out where I'd heard or read info about this song but wasn't wanting to post in case I got it all wrong.. :p

I think I have, a very long time ago. It was incomplete, right? About the mysterious Geraldine, right? I thought about that, but it seems to me that though the tone of the poem matches, I don't get the same feeling as the song. A Foolish Arrangement hints at something supernatural-in a good way. If memory serves, Christabel implied the supernatural in an eerier way...
Glad someone else loves this song! I think it's really underrated...

I adore this song, it is always up there somewhere in my top 20, it just transports me ... elsewhere ... along with This Twilight Garden and The Big Hand.

I think it's one of the better B sides for sure. A super song. I like that echo highlight when he sings "I fall with her" or something like that.

This song is certainly up there on my list of favourites! Cd 3 of JTD is the best of the 4 :-)

Yeah, it is. Though I reckon disc 2 gives it a run for its money with 2 Late and Fear of Ghosts.
