References to Cure Songs by other Artists

The Cure's music has influenced so many of us that it's not so uncommon to find other artists referencing Cure songs or somehow paying homage to the band. I'm actually surprised it doesn't happen MORE often, but I'm always thrilled whenever I find a new Cure reference.

So where have you found references to Cure songs?

Re: References to Cure Songs by other Artists

I just finished reading a graphic novel called Blankets by Craig Thompson. It's a large volume and about 2-inches thick but it reads very fast. It's a very tender story about a first love.

About 2/3rds of the way through the book, on page 375, I turned the page and found a chapter called "Just Like Heaven"! On page 426, the boy's sweetheart sings some of the words from the song to him.

Blankets inspired music for a soundtrack by Tracker, which interestingly enough does NOT include a cover of JLH, but it has some really great instrumental pieces. I like it quite well. It reminds me a lot of this band I like a lot called Heroin And Your Veins... which sounds a bit like a darker, more "film noir" sounding version of Harold Budd or Brian Eno.

Here's a link to Blankets:

Here's a link to hear samples from Tracker soundtrack for Blankets:

And here's where you can find samples from Heroin And Your Veins (since I mentioned them):

Re: References to Cure Songs by other Artists

I read a book called Losers by Matthue Roth a bit ago and all the chapter titles were Cure songs and the boy in the book listened to Cure songs to try and pronounce words like Robert Smith does :P He also listened to RATT, which I thought was funny, but it was a pretty fantastic read :)

Have a good one: in Mile End by Pulp (famously on the soundtrack of Trainspotting) Jarvis sings "just like Heaven, if it didn't look like Hell"...

Re: References to Cure Songs by other Artists

I've found a couple comics/graphic novels from Damon Hurd and Tatiana Gill (illustrator):

Just Like Heaven (2004), and
Pictures Of You (2007)

The second link (below) is an interview with Hurd about both graphic novels from the 2008 MoCCA Art Festival. There's apparently a third Cure-inspired graphic novel forthcoming.

The track six different ways in the Rules of attraction movie was a surprise. I really like this movie. I heard Robert was not a fan of the book ,the writer Brett Easton Ellis and the movie.

:D you're wellcome. it's an amazing pic indeed

The Rules of Attraction - a movie I always wanted to see and never got a chance to. Love Shannyn Sossamon, to me her and Zooey are the most beautiful girls in films today

Re: References to Cure Songs by other Artists

The Cure is mentioned Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist both the film and the novel.

In the book, Nick has Pictures Of You on his Breakup Desolation mix cd that he plays whilst driving his car and Norah tells him she doesn't need this right now. To change the topic they discuss The Cure's name. What do they think they’re the cure for? Happiness? and later on in a bathroom cubicle at a venue Norah writes The Cure for ex's.

In the film, Nick's ringtone is Boys Don't Cry, Norah says Nick is like her music soulmate except for all the Cure. He asks what's wrong with the Cure? And she says there's nothing wrong with the Cure, actually, but just the name. You know, the Cure? What are they the Curing? Get it? They should be called the Cause, right?

Also this doesn't really count but in my friends German class she had to translate an article and it mentioned Boys Don't Cry by the cult group The Cure :)
