(if necessary) limit the number of posts per day

I know it sounds extreme.

I'm only throwing this out there as a potential measure in lieu of closing the forum down entirely the next time the place is overrun with spam.

Clearly it's not bulletproof and could be defeated through use of multiple profiles, but it would be a bit of a deterrent and a pain in the ass for would-be spammers to have to create and manage to multiple profiles. But if things went South again, it might be a way to keep things a bit more under control until an admin (hopefully we have one) could step in and lock the rogue users out.

We've already had to give up the ability to post images due to past abusers, but at least there's still a forum for people who want to use it. With that in mind, I'm just trying to think of something that *might* help and wouldn't involve a lot of technology or having moderators.

I'm not sure why there aren't mods here. Perhaps because no one wants that thankless job at this point. Regardless, it's clear that we don't have mods now and may never have them again in the future. It's not the optimal situation, but I trust that there's a good reason for it.

I don't know what a reasonable per-day limit on posts might be, if there were to be a limit. But in lieu of having the place overrun with spam and shut down again, it might be a measure worth considering.

If something like that were to be put in place, it would be a good idea to have a counter, ideally in the message board posting dialog box, that would remind the poster that they're posting their 19th of a possible 20 permitted posts that day, for example. If that weren't possible, perhaps there could be a personal counter of the daily posts made/possible that would be viewable for each user at the top or bottom of their screen when in the forum.

It *might* help with spam and *might* help us to give more thought to things we post. After all, if something is available to us in unlimited quantities, we value it less.

I know it's a bit extreme, but I thought I'd throw it out there before the place is shut down again for spam and/or abuse.

Mmm.. that is a good thought but I don't think, as you say, it needs to be that extreme..
It's a tough one because it's not really any one person running the forum. It's seems that information is put up and then forgotten about..
They really need a person, or a couple of people who are well respected within this "community" to check back fairly regularly and if there are things like double posting, spam, rude posts, threats or just general rubbish they should have the power to lock or delete the troublesome posts/threads or post themselves to tell the offending person to pull their wieght or they are cut off etc..
Several forums I frequent have this kind of moderation in place (not band ones) and it works great.. But as I say, this is a different kettle of fish as it's run by a company, not by any one person..

That used to be the way here, a while ago, with people like Selkie (RIP dear) as mods. But I think if they decided to go that way again, they'd need to be VERY careful about who they chose from the pool of posters...

AGREED, Cats. If the band did decide to give it a go with mods again, they'd be taking a huge leap of faith.

I just hope that if they did try that again, they'll enlist more than just a few people because the spammers and trolls here will push the envelope 24/7 from the moment there's someone new on the job. They'll push and push and whine and cry foul when the rules are enforced. It would take a lot of energy and patience - more than just one or two people could handle for a sustained period of time.

I agree. You need a good number, and from different time zones as well to ensure someone's available if needed

Are you serious? Isn't this the board where we suggest how to improve things? You're just rude! Suh-ker-ity!!!

As far as a suggestion...I'm kind of getting tired of Davido's nonsensical and endless posts.

If you don't want to hear people's suggestions--or what you call whining--why are you The Moderator. Or are you not?

Luciel, this isn't a real moderator. This 'mod' appeared when it all kicked off here a while ago ;-)

Re: (if necessary) limit the number of posts per day

I just had to bump this thread back to the fore.
I cannot believe that I am the only person who finds the constant spamming of every thread going extremely irritating.
Those people responsible know who they are.
The sooner this is implemented the better. Then we might get the old people coming back again.
Sort it Geffen and sort it soon.

Is there really an issue? Back when I first wrote this, there were instances of certain attention-seeking individuals creating HUNDREDS of new (nonsensical) threads in a very short period of time. THAT was ridiculous. One had to scroll through 3 pages of gibberish just to be able to find the legitimate, active threads.

I took a quick look around today and didn't really see anything that jumped out at me. Where are you seeing this problem? (Not that I'm in a position to do anything about it)

Re: (if necessary) limit the number of posts per day

I believe there is an issue her LA. You've been here for a long time now. You've seen what a travesty this place has become haven't you? It used to be fun with a capital F. Using the excuse of the great 'purge' years ago can no longer be blamed for the absence of the old posters. No, it's the total rubbish which is spouted by the majority of people who frequent here now which is really sad.
People are posting just for the sake of hearing their own voices and most of it inanities you must admit?
The sooner this limit is enforced the less crap we'll have to endure.
