Favourite song lyrics/ lyrics that get stuck in your head

There are quite a few Cure lyrics that pop up in my head.

"The shallow drowned lose less than we"

and

"Hello image, sing me a line from your favourite song"

Are the most common.

What are your favourite Cure song lyrics or do any get stuck in your head?

Thanks

Re: Favourite song lyrics/ lyrics that get stuck in your head

Nice idea SAH ;-)

I have lots... but the one that springs immediately to mind is,

"I can never say no to anyone but you" from The Figurehead

I think it's due in part to way the music builds up to this line - and also the power and the cruelty of the words themselves.

The way I interpret them is that the person saying those words is saying that they are powerless, a push over, but still they have power over the person they are saying those words to. And what does that make them? I am nothing, but still I have power over you.

What do you like particularly about those lines SAH - and do you have anymore? :)

I really don't have any favorite Cure lyrics,(that's in common with the other bands I listen to). Every now and then a song will get stuck in my head for a couple of days - the last one was Where the Birds Always Sing...and its back now that I'm thinking of it...

Thanks Auntie Helen

The lyrics from The Figurehead are very powerful especially that line, it is one of the many Cure songs that get stuck in my head. It reminds me of Siamese Twins (I've really been into it lately) especially the line "I screamed your nothing, I don't need you anymore, your nothing, it fades and spins" mainly because of the power and the build up of the song, and the similarity between the two lyrics.

Since the first time I ever heard The Same Deep Water As You the line 'The shallow drowned lose less than we' has always fascinated me. I interpret it as meaning those who are not encompassed by the depth of life (or love) lose less than those who are. I think that Robert's metaphor of shallow drowned and use of other water related words throughout the song are representative of depth. What do you think it means?

And well the lyric from 'M' doesn't mean too much for me it just pops up a lot.

Another lyric I find interesting is " The further I get from the things that I care about the less I care about how much further away I get" from Fear Of Ghosts, I think it's a rather honest and insightful lyric.

The lyrics to Apart move me and have brought tears to my eyes, as I have seen this happen to friends of mine and I have also grown 'apart' from people before.

There are so many Cure lyrics that mean so much to me, Robert Smith truly is a brilliant lyricist.

I have been listening to'Where the birds always sing' (Leahcl mentioned this song too) alot lately and the lines 'The world is neither fair or unfair, it's just a way for us to understand that the world is neither just or unjust, it's just us trying to make sense of it" opened my eyes and mind to what I've always kind of known but never really completly believed. I am not religious and the whole song in general describes not only the emotions that we all feel dealing with death and other tragedies but the reality that we have to accept although it may seem cruel.

What other Cure lyrics are powerful, emotive or meaningful to you?

It surprises me that you don't have favourite lyrics Leahcl - what with you being a bit of a poet. Song lyrics are like poems set to music after all...

I wish I was a bit more poetic - I couldn't write a poem for toffee... but I can still appreciate poems and like I say song lyrics are like poems

Re: Re: Re: Favourite song lyrics/ lyrics that get stuck in your head

Pornography has some amazing lyrics. I love Siamese Twins, and there are a couple from the Pornography track itself that stick in my head, particularly

"One more day like today and I'll kill you
A desire for flesh
And real blood
I'll watch you drown in the shower
Pushing my life through your open eyes"

Because - again, the power of the words and the imagery they conjure up. Drowning in the shower would take some doing...

Another lyric that I think conjures up a vivid image is from "From the edge of the deep green sea"

"and she listens like her head's on fire
like she wants to believe in me"

I love that line, it always stays with me.

Nice interpretation of 'The shallow drowned lose less than we' SAH - I think you've got it spot on, those who feel less have less to lose.

Pornography has really grown on me :) At first I thought it was good and listened to it quite a bit but then I didn't listen to it for a while and I realised how brilliant it is :D. I love The Cure's title tracks and almost title tracks (e.g. The Kiss, Close To Me, and To Wish Impossible Things?). I was actually thinking about the lyrics of Pornography today the last line "I must fight this sickness.. find a Cure" I believe is very important not only to that specific track but Pornography as an album, it suggests optimism and brings hope, although Pornography is a very dark album I think it is also optimistic. What do you think? Your lyric from Pornography does provide some brilliant imagery, I find it interesting trying to interpret lines like those. On another note From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea is one of my favourite tracks from Wish, it is such a beautiful song that presents both the 'she listens like her heads on fire like she wants to believe in me' with the contrasting 'it's always the same, wake up in the rain, head in pain, hung in shame, a different name, same old game, love in vein. or the 'Why do you cry?, what did I say? but it's just rain I say brushing my tears away".

The line from From the edge of the deep green sea that always pops up in my mind is

"I never been so colourfully see through" (Even though it isn't too relevant).

I know it is a bit strange not having favorite lyrics but that doesn't mean that I don't love them. I love to sing along but for the most part I get immersed in the music, (Robert's voice is an amazing instrument), more than the lyrics for their meaning. You know if you asked me to recall a line of one of my poems I couldn't.

Where the Birds Always Sing has been in the front of my mind because I have been thinking about mortality and survival. It has taken me a while to work through that unfortunate situations are no ones fault, (especially my own), just bad luck.

No that makes perfect sense - and you're right about unfortunate situations being no-ones fault. Bad things happen to good people - there's no rhyme or reason and there's no point beating yourself up over something that happens beyond your control. Ever if you realise you could have done something in hindsight - blaming yourself doesn't achieve anything. All you can do is try and learn from your mistakes

I totally agree with you that Pornography is strangely uplifting & optimistic and the juxtaposition of the first line of the first song "It doesn't matter if we all die" and the last line of the last song "I must fight this sickness, Find a cure..." shows just that. To go from a completely nihilistic statement to a statement that shows a desire to survive is very powerful. To me it's like the cathartic experience of creating the album resulted in a shift from complete despair to a glimmer of hope and a desire to endure. On the whole I think Porno has some of my favourite lyrics but there are more!

The lyrics from Secrets - really touch me for their honesty. The line "I wish I was yours..." always gets me. It's such an open, honest statement. I love this song - and the whispered "Keep quiet" gives me shivers every time.

Interesting analysis of Pornography and I think you're spot on. :) I thought of another favourite lyric from Pornography

"Everything as cold as life, can no one save you?" from Cold. Cold is one of my favourite tracks from Pornography, it's quite powerful and I just really like it. That lyric just get's me, life can be so cold, lonely and cruel.

Wow, I never knew you were a fan of Secrets, Auntie Helen :) It's possibly my favourite track from Seventeen Seconds I also love the whispers in the background, and the repetition of 'I wish I was yours' it is so beautiful and honest and relatable (I believe that most people in their life have wished at sometime that they were someones but couldn't be because of various situations). Sorry my reply was similiar.

Re: Favourite song lyrics/ lyrics that get stuck in your head

Yup Secrets is a personal favourite :) I also love the line from In Your House

I change the time in your house
The hours I take
Go so slow ...

It's quite a surreal song - conjures up lots of strange scenes, almost dream like. I'd love to see RS pretending to swim in my house :D

Another dreamlike song (which I think I've read was based on two dreams, one of RS's and one of Mary's) Kyoto Song.

I particularly like the lines:

I see no further now than this dream
The trembling hand of the trembling man
Hold my mouth
To hold in a scream

Coming right up to date, Kyoto Song - with the Japanese theme, reminds me of a favourite lyric from The Hungry Ghost.

A floating bed
A head of stone
A home plugged into every phone

Kimono coral floral print
Exclusive tint and cut reclusive

I love the sound of "Kimono coral floral print" it rolls off the tongue nicely

In Your House does conjure up some very strange imagery. Haha.

I never knew Kyoto Song was based on RS and Mary's dream. (speaking of The Head On The Door, apparently Push is Mary's favourite song) Those are interesting lyrics do they belong to Robert's dream or Mary's?

I am not familiar with 'The Hungry Ghost' is it off 4:13 Dream?

Here is a lyric from one of my favourite Cure singles (I'm not even sure if it's my favourite lyric from this brilliant song but it pops up quite a lot)

And everytime I try to pick it up, Like falling sand,
As fast as I pick it up, It runs away through me clutching hands, But there's nothing else I can really do, There's nothing else I can really do, There's nothing else I can really do, At all...

^ I believe it can be applied to some many things. Perhaps a relationship that has ceased or isn't working out or something you must do but you can not achieve it. Maybe it's even a metaphor in a period of life when no matter how hard you try it just isn't working out.

Earlier on we spoke about imagery which reminded me of lyrics from All Cats Are Gray.

No shapes sail on the dark deep lakes and no flags wave me home.

Re: Favourite song lyrics/ lyrics that get stuck in your head

'The dawn call was broken, short, disconnected, far away...
I couldn't understand too much of what was being said...
A matter of minutes, peacefully, so sorry...
I had to think to breathe, my heart bursting in my head...
We moved in silence through a slowly waking world of pale grey rain...
And as we drove, a strange sun split the sky...
In that moment I knew nothing would ever be the same again...

The days fall out...
The weeks always run down
The months just fly...
The years go by...........'

This Morning.....probably in my top three Cure songs of all time.
Someone extremely close to himself, or possibly one of the other guys is in a hospital.
These words are barely sung, mostly spoken over one of Jason's most wonderful drum tracks. So full of emotion he is almost crying.
I wonder who it was written about.
It brings tears to my eyes each time I play it, and I play it a lot.

The Cure is one of the only bands I know almost all the lyrics from.

I have a lot of favorites too many to list , the dark romantic lyrics of Apart , the desparate lyrics of disintegration , the playfulness of Club America (It's a great song) and lets not forget the Kiss !
For every mood a lyric.

Looking so very much forward to the new album.

Re: Favourite song lyrics/ lyrics that get stuck in your head

I really like the lyrics to Like Cockatoos. It has very vivid, but dreamy imagery.

'And he was standing
At the corner
Where the road turned dark
A part of shiny wet
Like blood the rain fell
Black down on the street

And kissed his feet she fell
Her head an inch away from heaven
And her face pressed tight
And all around the night sang out
Like cockatoos'

'And turning on his heel
He left a trace of bubbles
Bleeding in his stead

And in her head
A picture of a boy who left her
Lonely in the rain
(And all around the night sang out
like cockatoos)'

Ooo nice question but soo hard almost every song has a lyrical gem :)
Mine are:

Give me your eyes that I might see, the blind man kissing my hands

Crying for sympathy crocodiles cry for the love of the crowd and three cheers from everyone

The very first time I saw your face I thought of a song
And quickly changed the tune

Say hello on a day like today say it everytime you move, the way you look at me now, makes me wish I was you.

OH and sooooo many more :)
