misheard lyrics!

i used to think it was
"Two pale *fingers* ache in silence.."
in reference to RS's fingers aching from all his guitar work! hehe

Re: misheard lyrics!

I can't remember what I thought I was hearing at the time, I just knew I was WAAAAY off when I was first listening to SO WHAT for the the first few times. So, I spent an entire night sitting with an ear to a speaker with a pencil & paper trying to get the lyrics right. I kept going back and forth across the room to replay the song to catch another few words correctly until I had the correct lyrics word-for-word.

The entire process brought back memories of me doing that kind of thing when I was a kid, trying to get the lyrics to a song. I have GREAT appreciation for printed lyrics...but the idea of trying to figure them out like that is quite nostalgic to me.

Re: misheard lyrics!

But what does it mean? I know he's not just quoting an advertisement for the fun of it! it is kinda funny on one level..but on another...Suzanne, do you think R is talking about how nice sounding voices! want to sell us superficial sugary feel-goods (and, (of course) they want us to order immediately, while we get to wait weeks and weeks for it to arrive!) while our more inner painful selves' cry for relationships go unheeded? How the oh so nice voices appealing to us really only want a buck off us and don't address our real issues?
how does the line in Ball of Confusion go? "The only person talkin' bout love today is the preacher!"
xoxo well, maybe a few others talk about it : )

Re: misheard lyrics!

I really really didn't get "Doubt" and in one part I swear it sounds like he goes: "I text myself and screaming throw myself in fury over the edge.." lol that was way before texting so that can't be right..heehee..

I think that he is brushing away a long argument like sugar being brushed off a table. Reading the back of the sugar package advertisement as being banal to classify where the argument has gone to...by that time...as being a boring and moot point.

I can remember doing that with cereal boxes to avoid listening to what was being argued around me and most particularly at me.

: ) I see how liberal my interpretation is and how punk rock your interpretation is! Love it.. :)
I recall an interview (and of course remembering his confession "I'll tell them anything at all.." keeps the grain of salt firmly held in cheek) how R said his son (i know..) would interpret a song of his in such a way as to make him jealous? Gee this was years ago..something about how his son'd interpret a song so different from its intention that it made him wish he'd thought of it first.

:-D

What I LOVE so much about Robert's lyrics, right from the start, is that they are universally adaptable to virtually anyone's own experience. So what he was feeling and thinking about when he wrote them is his own interpretation. And each person who hears them, and ponders them as poetry set to music, will have a different interpretation of their own. That, I think, is what makes The Cure's songs immortal. They are ALWAYS relevant to anyone, at any time, in any part of the world. I absolutely love that.

Re: misheard lyrics!

I'm still trying to figure out what Robert is singing before the bridge in Mint Car. 16 years later I still think it's Sinking as I'm Cruising along...but I'm sure it's wrong. Guess we will never know. Ah sweet mystery of life ....

Re: misheard lyrics!

I thought it was "DREAMING like the drowning man" and spent quite some time imagining what a drowning man would dream about. Later, when I learned that it is "breathing like the drowning man," I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.

not exiting or even interesting unless you're me but about halfway through splintered in her head he shouts my name.(my actual life name, not jones).. i noticed this the first time i heard it,about twenty years ago, and am still to be convinced it could be anything else.

Re: misheard lyrics!

I think when he's saying he's breathing like the drowning man, he is empathizing to the point of feeling it himself, he hates that she's drowning and is drowning with her.
It is perhaps the sweetest sentiment in recorded music.

another sentiment I've heard that comes kinda close is
"Children wonder fatherless through fields that spent their happiness...I grieve" Alien by Delirious?

Re: misheard lyrics!

For years I thought the line from Love Cats was -
"Not broken it pisses, hey there misses"

sorry :-(
