i can remember a show where they went into people's kitchens and (as you said) sometimes they'd cook a real recipe and sometimes it was a student microwaving some instant noodles or something equally basic. the show i'm thinking of was about 10 or 15 minutes long, possibly on channel 4 or itv. i can't remember the title, though, even if it is the one you were thinking of. sorry :(
