Believe

Words by Robert Smith

(Music by Earl Slick)

The longer I stay the more I seem to lose
It’s an argument I use to take me away
And the closer I get the less of me there is
I remember it like this
To make me forget

Yeah the older I grow the more of me is gone
It’s a way of holding on to let myself go
And the louder I shout the less I really care
It’s the attitude I wear
To get myself out

The strange thing is I ever changed at all
Seemed so sure you would stay my girl
The strange thing is I ever changed at all
Wanted so much to believe
Maybe too much to believe…

But the harder I try the less I ever do
I convince myself it’s true to bare me a lie
And the sooner I start the more of me is wrong
It’s a kind of putting on
To tear me apart

Yeah the closer I get the less of me there is
I remember it like this to make me forget
And the longer I stay the more I seem to lose
It’s the argument I use
To take me away

The strange thing is you never change at all
Seemed so sure you would stay my girl
The strange thing is you never change at all
Wanted so much to believe
Maybe too much to believe…
